Zanzibar, (probably of Persian زنگبار zangi Bar, meaning 'Coast Black') is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania comprising a pair of outer islands to the east coast of Africa called Zanzibar or Unguja (1.554 km²) y Pemba. These, with Mafia Island tend to be sometimes called the Spice Islands, although the term is most often associated with the Moluccas.
